The Story of the Autograph
Floyd Rayford is a former major league baseball player. He played in seven seasons from 1980 to 1987. He was a third baseman and catcher with the Baltimore Orioles (twice) and St. Louis Cardinals.
Rayford was born in Memphis, Tennesee but went to high school in Los Angeles, California. He was drafted out of high school by the California Angels in the fourth round of the 1975 MLB Draft. Before he appeared in the majors the Angels traded him to the Baltimore Orioles in 1979. He made his debut for the Orioles on April 17, 1980.
He only played in eight games that first season but he would be back to the majors by 1982. He was traded to St. Louis in the middle of the 1983 season and was purchased by the Orioles prior to the 1984 season and finished his career out in Baltimore.
He was primarily a backup during his career and only appeared in at least half of the games in any season three times while with the Orioles from 1984 through 1986. As you would imagine, his best season was the one in which he received the most playing time, 1985. That season he appeared in 105 games and got 372 plate appearances. He put up a .306 average with 18 homers and 48 RBI. Of course those were all career highs.
After his playing days he’s coached in the minors for a bunch of different teams. His “claim to fame” might be that Cal Ripken is the player who replaced him in the lineup to start his streak.
The Score on Floyd Rayford – 6.0
Floyd has a nice signature. I find it interesting that sometimes he stacked it and sometimes he signed on a line. It’s not like he was avoiding signing over himself like some guys seem to do, but usually guys have one way they tend to sign. One of these he had to sign a black part of the card (’88 Topps) and the other is a little smudged (’84 Topps). The ’87 Topps came out great though.
Thanks Mr. Rayford! I’m giving this return a 6.
