The Story of the Autograph

Eddie Taubensee is a former catcher in the major leagues. He played from 1991 to 2001 with the Cleveland Indians (twice), Houston Astros, and Cincinnati Reds.

Taubensee was born in Texas and grew up in Florida. He was drafted out of high school by the Cincinnati Reds in the sixth round of the 1986 MLB Draft. But while he played with the Reds in his career later, he didn’t make his debut in the bigs with them. He actually changed teams twice before that. First the Oakland Athletics took him in the 1990 rule 5 draft and then he was taken off waivers by Cleveland in April of 1991. He made his debut with them shortly after that on May 18, 1991.

He only spent that one season for his first stint in Cleveland as he was traded to the Astros before 1991 was over in a deal that brought Kenny Lofton to the Indians. Taubensee spent the next few years in Houston before being traded to Cincinnati.

It was in Cincinnati where Taubensee really shined. He hit 40 to 50 points higher than he did in Houston and Cleveland during his time there with a .286 average. And in 1999 he was was of the teams best hitters with a .311 average. He also doubled his career high in home runs that year with 21 and had a career high in RBI with 87. The Reds were good that year but ultimately lost to the Mets in game 163.

He was traded to the Indians after the 2000 season and his last appearance in the majors was with them on October 7, 2001.

Eddie has a really flat signature. I can see the “E” and I get the feeling there is a “T” crossed in there but it’s hard to tell. The best one of this return is the 1993 Upper Deck because it definitely gets shown off on that one. I hope I can find some Reds cards of his because he had his best years there and it would mean I have him on cards with all the teams he represented.

Thanks Mr. Taubensee! I’m giving this return a 6 overall.
