The Story of the Autograph

Eddie Taubensee was a steady and reliable catcher who carved out a solid 11-year career in Major League Baseball (MLB). Best known for his time with the Cincinnati Reds, Taubensee was a left-handed hitter with a strong bat for his position. Though he wasn’t a household name, he was a key contributor behind the plate throughout the 1990s.

Eddie Taubensee was born on October 31, 1968, in Beeville, Texas. He was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the sixth round of the 1986 MLB Draft out of Lake Howell High School in Florida. A tall and athletic catcher, he showed early promise as a hitter while developing his defensive skills in the minor leagues. Before ever playing a game for the Reds he was taken by the Athletics in the 1990 rule 5 draft and then in the following season taken off of waivers by the Indians.

Taubensee made his MLB debut on May 18, 1991, with the Indians. He split time behind the plate during his rookie season, but after just one year in Cleveland, he was on the move again. Before the 1992 season, the Indians traded Taubensee to the Houston Astros. In Houston, he saw more playing time and began to show his potential as a solid offensive catcher. While he never developed into a power hitter, he hit for a respectable average and handled the Astros’ pitching staff well.

Taubensee’s career took off after he was traded to the Cincinnati Reds in 1994. With the Reds, he became a primary catcher and one of the better-hitting backstops in the National League. His best years came between 1998 and 1999. In 1998, he hit .278 with a 11 home runs. He followed that up with an even stronger 1999 campaign, batting .311 with 21 home runs and 87 RBI – both career highs. That season, the Reds won 96 games but fell just short of the playoffs after losing a tiebreaker game to the New York Mets.

Taubensee returned to Cleveland for his final season in 2001, playing in 52 games before retiring. He finished his MLB career with a .273 batting average, 94 home runs, and 419 RBI over 975 games.

After retiring, Taubensee stayed connected to the game as a hitting instructor and coach. He also became involved in faith-based mentorship programs, using his platform to encourage and inspire others.

Eddie Taubensee may not have been the flashiest catcher of his era, but he was a dependable and respected player. His ability to hit for average, particularly in the latter half of his career, made him a valuable asset to the Reds. While he never made an All-Star team, he was an integral part of Cincinnati’s success in the late 1990s.

His career serves as a reminder that consistency and hard work can lead to a long and meaningful tenure in the big leagues.

Eddie is usually a really quick returner, as evidenced by all of these. For having such a long last name, his signature is pretty compact. At least it’s compact vertically. He’s got a good bit of style to his name, but sometimes on the cards with busy images and him using that thin marker, the autograph gets eaten up a bit. I think the best of these are in the middle grouping.

Thanks Mr. Taubensee! I’m giving this return a 6.5 overall.

These are not my first successful returns from him. To see some others, check out these posts:
