The Story of the Autograph

Doug Rau is a former pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1972 through 1979 and then again in 1981 with the California Angels.

Rau was born and raised in Texas and attended Texas A&M. The Dodgers made him their first round draft pick in 1970 (this was after first being chosen out of high school by the Orioles in 1967 but not signing). He made his debut for the Dodgers on September 2, 1972. He worked mostly as a reliever for the first two years of his career.

He began his career as a full-fledged starter in 1974 and helped the Dodgers to the NL Pennant with a 13-11 record that year. He improved in 1975 and went 15-9 with a 3.11 ERA. The next year he improved his ERA to 2.57 and was second in the National League in that category.  He continued to be a key part of the Dodgers rotation in 1977 and ’78 when the Dodgers made two consecutive World Series runs.

His career started to come to a close in 1979 when he began to have issues with his rotator cuff. After surgery he didn’t make it back to the majors in 1980. In 1981 he got back into the league with the Angels but only appeared in three games.

The Score on Doug Ray – 6.5

Doug does a pretty good job filling up the cards considering there are only seven letters in his full name. There are a lot of good ones in this bunch but the 1978 cards is the best to me. As I learned more about his career, I thought it was funny that his 1981 Fleer card was of him on the Dodgers when he hadn’t appeared for them since 1979. However, he wasn’t actually released from the Dodgers until February of 1981.

Thanks Mr. Rau! I’m giving this return a 6.5.

Seems like a pretty reliable signer from what I’ve seen. I’m sure you have a dupe or two to send him.
