The Story of the Autograph

Dick Bosman is a former right-handed starting pitcher in the major leagues. He played in eleven seasons from 1966 to 1976. During that time he played for the Washington Senators/Texas Rangers, Cleveland Indians, and Oakland Athletics.

Bosman was born and raised in Wisconsin. The Pirates signed him as an amateur free agent in 1963. A year later he was drafted by the San Francisco Giants and then the year after that by the Washington Senators in the 1963 and 1964 first-year and minor league drafts respectively. He would make his first appearance for the Senators on June 1, 1966.

He played in some games his first two seasons, starting most of them, but when he got a bigger shot in 1968, it was mostly as a reliever. The next season he was a starter and put up one of the best seasons in his career. In 1969 he went 14-5 with a league-leading 2.19 ERA in 31 appearances with 26 starts. He continued his winning ways the next season with a career high 16 wins. He stuck with the Senator as they changed into the Rangers for the 1972 season, but record-wise this started to go down hill.

He was traded to the Indians with Ted Ford for Steve Dunning in May of 1973, his record continued to tumble at this point. He was better in 1974 and 1975, but the Indians traded him to the Athletics in 1975 with Jim Petty for Blue Moon Odom and cash. He would finish his career out in Oakland.

Later he would go on to be a pitching coach in the major and the minors and most recently has been with the Ray developing the likes of Wade Davis, James Shields, Jake McGee, Jeremy Hellickson and Alex Cob.

Dick has a pretty standard signature. I think these cards aren’t great for showing it off though. Even thought the 1975 and 1977 Topps cards weren’t signed over the facsimile signature, it still makes things look odd with that on there. I’d like to make sure I get a card of him as a Senator signed if I try him again.

Thanks Mr. Bosman! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
