The Story of the Autograph

Dave Duncan is a former catcher in the major leagues. He played during eleven seasons between 1964 and 1976. Over those years he played for the Kansas City/Oakland Athletics, Cleveland Indians and Baltimore Orioles.

Duncan was born in Dallas, Texas and went to high school in San Diego, California. He was signed by an amateur free agent by the Athletics in 1963 out of high school. He made his major league debut just one year later on May 6, 1964. He appeared that early and was the youngest player in the majors to stop other teams from being able to draft him under the rules at that time. He was back in the minors until the 1976 season. He earned an All-Star nod in 1971 and followed that up with another great season while being part of the Athletics World Series victory in 1972.

The Athletics traded him to the Indians with George Hendrick for Ray Fosse and Jack Heideman. He went through some injuries while in Cleveland and the grind of playing a lot for a catcher took a toll on his offense. The Indians would then trade him to the Orioles with Alvin McGrew for Don Hood and Boog Powell. He would then be moved to the White Sox in 1976 for Pat Kelly but was released before the 1977 season started.

He began coaching in 1978 with the Indians and became a great pitching coach. He would coach Cy Young award winning pitchers in 1983 (LaMarr Hoyt), 1990 (Bob Welch), 1992 (Dennis Eckersley) and 2005 (Chris Carpenter). He was also part of World Series winners as a coach in 1989, 2006, and 2011.

The Score on Dave Duncan – 5.5

This was a challenging one to get to Dave for signature. There’s just not a great place to sign and a lot of the card is really dark. He chose the place that he could put the biggest signature on, but also the darkest spot. If that facsimile signature wasn’t on there it would have probably made a good space for him.

Thanks Mr. Duncan! I’m giving his return a 5.5.
