The Story of the Autograph

Danny Tartabull is a former outfielder and DH in the major leagues. He played from 1984 to 1997 with the Seattle Mariners, Kansas City Royals, New York Yankees, Oakland Athletics, Chicago White Sox, and Philadelphia Phillies.

Tartabull is a native of Puerto Rico. His father, Jose Tartabull is Cuban and played in the majors during the 60’s. He went to high school in Miami, Florida where he was drafted by the Reds in the 3rd round of the 1980 MLB Draft. He never appeared with the Reds in the majors though. In 1983 he was chosen by the Mariners with a free agent compensatory pick. He debuted for them on September 7, 1984 starting out as a shortstop until 1986 when he became an outfielder. He had a great rookie year with 25 homers, 96 RBI and hit .270. The Mariners would trade him and Rick Luecken to the Royals for Scott Bankhead, Mike Kingery and Steve Shields.

He had an even better second season in his first year in Kansas City hitting .309 with 34 homers and 101 RBI. Overall he was great as a Royal despite some injury issues here and there. In 1991 he would earn what would be his first and only All-Star nod while hitting a career high .316 with 31 home runs and 100 RBI. He would end up moving on to the Yankees as a free agent the next season.

He would continue to have some solid seasons but he never saw the success that he had with the Royals. He would be traded from the Yankees to the A’s and referred to it as being “released from jail.” He would end up with seven seasons with 25 or more homers and five season with over 100 RBI.

I’m on the fence of if these are actually Danny’s autograph. First, if you just look at it, that doesn’t look like his name. Second, if you look up his autograph it really doesn’t look like on that is more like his name. But then there are some that seem to be like this on some other signed cards. So I’m really not sure about these at all. I’m just going to hope it is a valid autograph.

Thanks Mr. Tartabull! I’m giving this return a 7.
