The Story of the Autograph

Clint Hurdle is a former player and manager in the major leagues. He was an outfielder for the Kansas City Royals, Cincinnati Reds, New York Mets (three times), and St. Louis Cardinals from 1977 to 1987. He later managed the Colorado Rockies and Pittsburgh Pirates from 2002 to 2018.

Hurdle was born in Michigan but moved to Florida when he was younger and grew up there. He could have gone to Harvard or Miami to play both football and baseball but passed that up when the Royals selected him in the first round of the 1975 MLB Draft with the 9th overall pick. He made his major league debut two years later on September 18, 1977. The next year he was tabbed as “This Year’s Phenom” by Sports Illustrated.

Unfortunately Hurdle never really lived up to that billing. He had two years with 130 or more game with the Royals with his best being 1980 when he hit .294 with ten homers and 60 RBI in 130 games. He was traded to the Reds in December of 1981 and from there he moved around a lot, mostly as a free agent, but also as a Rule 5 draft pick.

After his playing days immediately went into coaching within the Mets minor league system. He moved up tot the bigs as a coach with the Rockies and turned that into a managing career starting in 2002. In 2013 he was name NL Manager of the year while leading the Pirates.

The Score on Clint Hurdle – 7.0

I’ve sent to Clint in the past and he didn’t sign anything while with the Pirates. He would always request a donation to his charity. This time he signed one and then noted that he would like a donation. I’ve already sent to him again with a donation to have him sign other cards. I do like the blue on this Royals card and I’m hoping to get him on a Mets card.

Thanks Mr. Hurdle! I’m giving this return a 7.
