The Story of the Autograph

Butch Hobson is a former player and manager in the major leagues. The right-handed hitting third baseman played from 1975 to 1982 with the Boston Red Sox, California Angels and New York Yankees. He was manager of the Red Sox from 1992 to 1994.

Hobson was born and raised in Alabama. He went to the University of Alabama and played football as well as baseball. He was a quarterback under Bear Bryant from 1969 to 1972 and played in eleven games in 1971. But it was with the Crimson Tide baseball team that he was a success and he was First-Team All-SEC in 1973. The Red Sox picked him in the eighth round of the 1973 Draft and he debuted for them on September 7, 1975.

He had a few good years between 1977 and 1979 when he played over 146 games each of those years (otherwise he never appeared in more than 93 games). His best year was 1977 when he hit .265 with 30 homers and 112 RBI which were all career highs. As good as he was offensively in 1977 though, he was worse defensively in 1978 with 43 errors and a .899 fielding percentage (the first below .900 by a regular player in 60 years).

In 1981 he was traded to the Angels with Rick Burleson for Carney Lansford and Mark Clear. He closed his major league career out with the Yankees in 1982 and would play in the minors with the Columbus Clippers until 1985.

He went into coaching next and working in the Mets farm system and then to the Red Sox. Eventually they promoted him to the big club between 1992 and 1994. After that he bounced around the minors a bit. These days you can find him managing the independent Chicago Dogs.

There were a couple things wrong with these. First, you can see the 1982 card has a false start on it where he must have started with a bad marker. Second, you can see the 1979 Topps card is smudged. The 1981 Topps card is actually pretty good and definitely a lot better than the other two.

Thanks Mr. Hobson! I’m giving this return a 5.
