The Story of the Autograph

Bruce Benedict is a former catcher who played in the major leagues from 1978 through 1989. He spent his entire career with the Atlanta Braves and was a two-time All-Star.

Benedict was born in Alabama and went to college at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. The Braves drafted him in 1976 in the fifth round of the MLB Draft. He would make his debut in August of 1978 on his 23rd birthday – August, 18, 1978.

His playing time would pick up in 1980 when he made it into 120 games and had over 400 at bats. 1981 was his first really good year and he was recognized as an All-Star for the first time in his career. But 1983 was probably the best year of his career. He played in 134 games with almost 500 at bats and almost broke made it to a .300 average when he ended up with a career high .298 average for the year. He also hit 2 homers and drove in 43 RBI (which was just short of a career high). He earned his second All-Star nod that year.

After his playing days were done Benedict got into coaching. He worked all over the Mets system and then later on scouted for the Cardinals. He also works as a college basketball official in Division I and II.

I love the big “Bs” in Bruce’s signature. I wish I had some cards that help his signature stand out a bit more. But my favorite these cards are the 1982 and 1984 cards because I love those blue-on-blue uniforms the Braves had back them. I also like the colors that Topps used with the 1982 cards that year.

Thanks Mr. Benedict! I’m giving this return a 5.5.
