Breaking Blasters: 2019 Topps Gypsy Queen

Breaking Blasters: 2019 Topps Gypsy Queen

Gypsy Queen is always one of my favorite releases each year. I love the feel and weight of the cards as well as the pictures and the old school feel of the design. With the old school feel I like that there are old players in the set list as well.

This year’s release has a bit more of a playful feel to it while still bringing everything else you’d expect to get out of it. I was excited to see it back and glad I could find it easily at Target. In fact, I caught them right as they were stocking the shelves and I got my blaster right as they were taking it out of the box.

Let’s see what we get out of this blaster…

Dude… Sweet…

I picked these because I thought they were some of the best pictures I got out of this blaster. First off, that Reggie is one of my favorite cards of the year so far. And for so many reasons. I love the old batting helmet and the afro popping out of it. I love the sunglasses and the reflection. And lastly I love the clenched fist as if to say “right on!”.

The Upton and Doolittle cards are great examples to how colorful and playful Gypsy Queen is this year. The design itself is very colorful with the blue plate where the name is as well as where the “GQ” is. Then there’s even more color in the circles on the four corners. Speaking of the corners, I love the little “slated at” where the position is.

I won’t say this is my favorite Gypsy Queen design, but I think it’s a good stretch into a new design while still feeling like the previous designs.

My Metsies

Only two Mets in this blaster is disappointing but then again it’s not like a GQ blaster has a ton of cards in it. So I’ll take my two and be happy. I do like that I got Jeff McNeil as I only have one other card for him. It’s actually quite an odd picture with his expression and the hat in the midst of of falling off.

Rookie Returns

Honestly I’m not sure of this year’s crop of rookies. I know a couple of these guys but not all of them. Ramon Laureano is probably the one I know the best just from the viral videos of his throws. He’s definitely a fun guy to watch in the field and I’m always up for a highlight of his.

Missing Ouija Board Cards

I have like the themes of the inserts in Gypsy Queen the last few years. The Fortune Teller cards are always a favorite as the idea of the thinner card is pretty cool. The Tarot card is a fun idea too. In other packs I actually got both Ohtani cards (one pitcher, one hitter).

It Ain’t Easy Being Green

Gypsy Queen blasters, like a lot of other blasters might, come with a special back of inserts. This year they are of the green variety. I could do without a pack of inserts. I’d rather have another regular pack.

I will say that this was a damn good back of inserts though. All these guys are pretty damn good.

Overall I like Gypsy Queen. I won’t get another blaster though. I would suggest getting those jumbo packs where there are the three packs of cards put together. Not that I’m after inserts, but you’re going to have a better shot at inserts or variations or even something else fun. At least that’s my experience so far. Still, this was fun to open for me.

That “Slated at” thing is indeed pretty neat, although holy cow is it small! Still need to get my first Jeff McNeil!

Yeah, I might be getting too old for type that small. I definitely had to adjust how far away I held it from my face to see it. I actually got a McNeil in flagship too.
