The Story of the Autograph

Bob Kearney is a former catcher in the major leagues. He played from 1979 to 1987 with the San Francisco Giants, Oakland Athletics and Seattle Mariners.

Kearney was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. He went on to attend the University of Texas where the Giants drafted him in the 14th round of the 1977 MLB Draft. He made his debut for them two years later on September 25, 1979. Being that was the very end of the season he only appeared in two games and had just one plate appearance. He was back down to the minors the following season.

In 1980 he was chosen by the A’s in the 1980 minor league draft. When Mike Heath and Jeff Newman were injured in 1982, he moved up to the big ball club for a bit but only appeared in 22 games for the season. In 1983 he got into 108 games for the A’s and then they traded him the following year to the Mariners were he continued getting good playing time for the next two seasons.

Kearney had a great throwing arm but earned a reputation as a bad pitch-calling catcher, on top of not hitting very well. He played his final major league game on June 20, 1987. For his career he hit .233 with 27 home runs and 133 RBI.

So this is not a ball point, or doesn’t appear to be, but it almost came out like one. That’s especially the case toward the end of Bob’s signature. He definitely puts a lot more in to the front end of his signature than he does for the end as it trails off. I think that happens in a lot of signatures but it feels a little more pronounced with Bob’s.

Thanks Mr. Kearney! I’m giving this return a 5.5.
