The Story of the Autograph
Bill Lee is a former left-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball. He played from 1969 to 1982 for the Boston Red Sox and the Montreal Expos. While he played some good baseball he is probably almost better known for being a pretty “out there” guy as well as for his antics. These earned him the nickname “Spaceman.”
Lee was born and raised in southern California and says he was taught how to pitch by his aunt, Annabelle Lee, who was a pitcher in the AAGPBL. He went to USC where he was part of a College World Series win in 1968. Later that year he was drafted by the Red Sox in the 22nd round of the MLB Draft.
He made his debut on June 25, 1969 and was used mostly as a relief pitcher to start. He became known for his “Leephus” pitch or “Space Ball,” his version of the ephus pitch. His best overall year was probably 1973 when he went 17-11 with a 2.75 ERA in 33 starts with 18 complete games and a career high 120 strikeouts. Overall he broke the 15 win mark four times in his career, eight of those years being years in which he was primarily used as a starter.
After professional baseball he was part of some barnstorming, semi-professional teams. He also wrote several books and ran for office.
The Score on Bill Lee – 7.0
Bill has a great signature if you just made it only his name. But I’ve always loved that he puts “Earth” on the cards as well. He has a fun signature and he does a great job on each one.
Thanks Mr. Lee! I’m giving this return a 7.
