The Story of the Autograph
Pete Mackanin is a former second baseman and manager in the major leagues. He played from 1973 to 1981 with the Texas Rangers, Montreal Expos, Philadelphia Phillies and Minnesota Twins. He later managed the Pittsburgh Pirates (2005), Cincinnati Reds (2007), and Philadelphia Phillies (2015-2017).
Mackanin was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He was drafted by the Washington Senators in the fourth round of the 1969 MLB Draft. Before could play in Washington they moved to Texas and became the Rangers. He made his major league debut for them on July 3, 1973. He only played a little for the Rangers in two seasons and was then traded with Don Stanhouse to the Montreal Expos for Willie Davis.
He got the most playing time of his career in his season with Montreal. 1975 was the best of his career. In 130 games he hit .225 with twelve homers and 44 RBI. The next year he would play in 114 games and he would only have one other season with more than 77 games played in his career. He moved on to the Phillies where he played eighteen games over two seasons and then to the Twins where he closed out his career.
Mackanin spent many years coaching and managing in the minors. He started coaching in the majors in 1997 with the Expos. In 2005 he got his first shot at managing after Lloyd McLendon was fired. He actually did that again in Cincinnati after Jerry Narron was fired and in Philadelphia after Ryne Sandberg stepped down. The difference with the final stop was he spent parts of three seasons with the Phillies.
The Score on Pete Mackanin – 6.5
It looks like Pete only really signs his last name. I can’t figure if there is much else on there. It looks like he just loops the front of his “M” and then goes right into it. I guess it makes it stick out. I’m hoping I can find some older cards of his to try him again and maybe throw in a Phillies team card from when he managed there.
Thanks Mr. Mackanin! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
