The Story of the Autograph
Will Clark played first base in the majors from 1986 through 2000. He’s best known as a Giant but also played with the Rangers, Orioles and Cardinals. He was known as “Will the Thrill” and was a six time All-Star, in the running for MVP for a few years and the NLCS MVP in 1989.
Clark was born and raised in Louisiana and had an awesome career in high school. He continued that in college at Mississippi State. He was part of a great duo dubbed “Thunder and Lightning” while played with Rafael Palmeiro as a Bulldog. They were known for disliking each other. While he was in college he played in the ’84 Olympics with a bunch of other future major leaguers as well and won a silver medal. In 1985 Clark won the Golden Spikes Award for being the best college baseball player.
The Giants drafted Clark with the second overall draft pick in 1985. By the next year he was in the majors, making his debut on April 8 and smacking a homer off of Nolan Ryan in his first at bat. He would lead the league in RBI and walks by ’88 and runs in ’89 while batting .333. He was getting MVP votes while getting five All-Star selections. He also won a Gold Glove and two Silver Sluggers all in San Francisco.
He made another All-Star game while playing for the Rangers and had some really good years there. He finished his time in the majors out with the Baltimore for a season and a half and then St. Louis.
The Score on Will Clark – 7.0
I’m definitely excited about this one. Even though I grew up a Mets fan, but I was always a fan of Will for some reason. This is a good one overall so I will definitely be trying to send another. I sent two this time and only one came back so I’ll just send the one next time. The marker came out a little light and the card is a little busy. But I also love that this is an ’89 card and that was a special year for the Giants.
Thanks Mr. Clark! This one gets a 7.
