The Story of the Autograph

Turk Wendell is a former right-handed relief pitcher. He pitched in the majors from 1993 through 2001 with the Cubs, Mets, Phillies and Rockies. He also best known for being very quirky and extremely superstitious.

Wendell was born and raised in Massachusetts and went to college at Quinnipiac in Connecticut. He’s still among the school’s all-time leaders in strikeouts and ERA. He was drafted by the Braves in 1991 in the fifth round the MLB Draft but he never made an appearance for them in the majors. Before he was called up he was traded to the Cubs.

He made his major league debut on June 17, 1993 with the Cubs in a start against the Cardinals. Between going up and down to the minors and the strike in 1994, he didn’t play much in the majors those first two years. In 1995 he was moved to the bullpen and started to make a career out of it. The Cubs traded him to the Mets in 1997 and he spent a good portion of his playing time there and would pitch for the Mets and led the team in games pitched in 1999 and 2000. The Mets appeared in the playoff both of those years including the 2000 World Series in which they lost to the Yankees.

While he pitched well, it was his jumping over foul lines on his way on and off the mound, brushing his teeth between innings and throwing the rosin bag around that made him a popular personality wherever he played.

Turk has a really fancy signature and he did a great job on these. I’m actually impressed how he did so well to have a consistent small signature on his prospects card. I love the 1994 Collector’s Choice card because it shows just how quirky he was. And it appears he continues that quirkiness today. I noticed that he basically colored the edges of every card he signed with his pen. They look a little worse for wear I guess, but it seems to be full on Turk.

Thanks Mr. Wendell! I’m giving this return a 7.
