The Story of the Autograph
Tom Waddle played wide receiver in the NFL for six years. He spent his entire career with the Chicago Bears. These days Tom is a broadcaster. He works in radio and TV.
Tom went to Boston College and had a great career there. He might have started slowly as a freshman and sophomore, but the he started to break out as a junior. In 1987 he had 43 catches for 781 yards. But then as a senior in 1988 he totaled 70 catches, 902 yards and 5 TDs. He finished his college career as the career leader for receptions in a season and is tied for first for receptions in a single game with 13 which he did against Notre Dame in his senior year.
Waddle was signed by the Bears in 1989 as an undrafted free agent. He struggled in his first two years. Then in 1991 he got a chance to start when other receivers on the team were injured. He would lead the Bears in receiving for the 1991 and 1992 season. He had two great performances in the 1991 season with eight catches for 102 yards against the Jets and then nine catches for 104 yards and a touchdown in a playoff loss to Dallas.
After a bad 1992 season, Mike Ditka was fired. With Dave Wannstedt moving in as the head coach Tom was demoted. After injuries to his knee and a concussion in 1993, Waddle’s career was on the way down.
The Score on Tom Waddle – 6.0
Tom has a pretty cool autograph. The “T,” “W,” and “dd” really stick out and I like the flair that it brings to it. One thing that I notice about his signature is that while each one is consistent as far as the style goes, but the size varies a bit. The other part about this that’s inconsistent is the quality of how the pen worked. The best one out of the three is the Skybox card.
Thanks Mr. Waddle! I’m giving these a 6.
