Tom Lawless may not have had the gaudy numbers of a superstar, but his knack for delivering in the game’s most critical moments made him a memorable figure in Major League Baseball (MLB). Thomas James Lawless was born on December 19, 1956, in Erie, Pennsylvania. Growing up, he displayed athletic talent in multiple sports, but baseball emerged as his true passion. After excelling in high school, he played college baseball at Penn State Behrend (part of the College of Penn State University), where his solid defense and versatility caught the attention of professional scouts. Lawless made his MLB debut with the Cincinnati Reds on July 15, 1982. Over eight seasons, he played for the Reds, Montreal Expos, St. Louis Cardinals, and Toronto Blue Jays. While he was never a regular starter, Lawless became a valuable utility infielder, known for his solid defense and team-first attitude. During his MLB career, Lawless posted modest offensive numbers, hitting .207 with two home runs and 24 RBI over 343 games. Lawless’s defining moment came in Game 4 of the 1987 World Series while playing for the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals faced off against the Minnesota Twins, and Lawless, who had hit just one home run in his entire MLB career to that point, was an unlikely candidate for heroics. In the fourth inning, with two runners on base, Lawless delivered a stunning three-run home run off Twins pitcher Frank Viola. The blast not only helped the Cardinals win the game but also became iconic for Lawless’s confident bat flip—a rare display of swagger in an era where such gestures were uncommon.
Though the Cardinals ultimately lost the series in seven games, Lawless’s home run remains one of the most memorable moments in World Series history, proving that even the most unheralded players can shine on the biggest stage.
After retiring as a player in 1990, Lawless transitioned into coaching and managing. He served as a coach in the minor leagues and eventually became a manager, earning a reputation for his ability to develop young talent. In 2014, Lawless briefly managed the Houston Astros as an interim manager, leading the team to an 11–13 record to finish the season. His tenure as a manager highlighted his deep understanding of the game and his ability to connect with players.

If there’s one thing I could say about Tom’s signature, its that it is the absolute neatest signature in the TTM game. It’s at the top if it isn’t numero uno. These came out great which is pretty standard from him. The black marker goes really well with all this Cardinal-ness on these cards.
