The Story of the Autograph
Tom Griffin is a former right-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1969 to 1982 with the Houston Astros, San Diego Padres, California Angels, San Francisco Giants, and Pittsburgh Pirates.
Griffin was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. He was drafted out of high school by the Houston Astros with the fourth overall pick in the first round of the 1966 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut for the Astros three years later on April 10, 1969. He had a great rookie season going 11-10 with a 3.54 ERA in 31 starts and throwing 200 strikeouts. Unfortunately he would fall off a bit in the following years with a 3-13 record and 5.74 ERA the year after.
He stuck around in Houston for eight seasons and would eventually have what would be his career year in 1974. That year he started 34 games with 211 innings pitched. He put up a 14-10 record with a 3.54 ERA. Two years later he would be put on waivers by the Astros and was picked up by the Padres. That was the start of some bouncing around to close out his career, but he did spend a few years in San Francisco.
The Score on Tom Griffin – 6.5
Tom has a pretty cool signature. I always love when there’s some repetitive elements and I feel like the top of the “T” and “G” do that a little bit. I think the Topps card had some issues but none of that was on Tom, it’s definitely the age of the card.
Thanks Mr. Griffin! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
