The Story of the Autograph
Terry Collins is a former manager and coach in the major leagues. He managed the Houston Astros, Anaheim Angels, and New York Mets. He also managed the Orix Buffaloes in Japan and coached with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
Collins is a native of Michigan and wen to Eastern Michigan University. He played in the minors as a shortstop. Then he started his coaching career in 1981 in the minor leagues. He built his way up and in 1994 became the coach of the Houston Astros. He spent the next three seasons there, winning 82 games in his last season and finishing with a winning record in 1996.
From there he moved on to the Angels for three years. He put up two winning record in 1997 and 1998, but 1999 was tough and the team won only 51 games before he was replaced. He went back to coaching and got back to managing in a move to Japan.
But his best years were with the Mets. He started in New York in 2011. Those were some tough years for the Mets but they stuck with Collins. He had losing record in his first four years, but flirted with .500. Then in 2015 he led the Mets to 90 wins and a pennant, but unfortunately they couldn’t get it done in the World Series against the Royals. They would win 87 games the next season and make it back to the playoffs but lose in the Wild Card game. He ended up as the second-winningest coach to Davey Johnson in the Mets’ franchise history.
Collins went into broadcasting and worked in the Mets front office. These days he’s been working as a consultant with the Marlins.
The Score on Terry Collins – 6.5
This is a good one from Terry and I especially like the two types of cards I have here. The minor league cards are perfect for him. He was minor league manager for a long time before getting a shot. But the 2015 Topps card is perfect because that was his greatest year as a manager, and not too bad a year to be a Mets fan either.
Thanks Mr. Collins! I’m giving this return a 6.5 overall.
