The Story of the Autograph

Steve Swisher is a former catcher. He played from 1974 through 1982 in the major leagues with the Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals, and San Diego Padres.

Swisher attended Ohio University and was an All-Conference player in the Mid-American Conference for three of the seasons he played. During his freshman year they made it to the College World Series. The White Sox drafted him in the first round of the 1973 MLB Draft, but he was traded to the Cubs before the end of the year in a trade that brought Ron Santo to the south side.

He played with the Cubs through 1977 and earned an All-Star game appearance before he left Wrigley (although he was referred to by Jim Caple as one of the five worst players named All-Stars).

He was traded to St. Louis before the 1976 season. The move saw his playing time drop considerably. He was then traded again in 1980 to the San Diego Padres, but still his playing time was down from when he was a Cub. After his playing days were over he became a minor league manager.

Swisher is the father of former major league Nick Swisher.

The Score on Steve Swisher – 6.5

A double initial name can be one of the best things ever. Steve doesn’t really disappoint with the way he does his “S’s”. They seem to both have a little tail on them. The card of him in the catchers gear came out better than it look in person. But my favorite card of the bunch (even though it’s not my favorite signature) is the 1977 Topps because he’s got the shifty eyes.

Thanks Mr. Swisher! I’m giving this return a 6.5 overall.
