The Story of the Autograph
Steve Rogers is a former right-handed starting pitcher in the major leagues. He played for the Montreal Expos for his whole career from 1973 to 1985.
Rogers was born and raised in Missouri. He helped his team win a state championship in high school and while he was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 67th round of the 1967 MLB Draft, he and his family felt he wasn’t ready. HE went on to the University of Tulsa and helped reach the College World Series title game.
He was later drafted by the Expos in the first round of the 1971 MLB Draft with the fourth overall pick. He made his major league debut two seasons later on July 18, 1973. He had a great first season going 10-5 with a 1.54 ERA in 17 games and 134 innings. He would end up finishing second in the Rookie of the Year voting to Gary Matthews.
Overall Rogers had a great career. While he lost a league leading 22 games in 1974 and an NL-leading 17 games in 1976, and never won 20 games in a season, ultimately had eight out of his 13 years with a winning record. He also lead the majors in ERA in 1982 at 2.40. He made the All-Star team five times in his career. And he was part of some of the best early Expos teams when they finally had success, including starting and winning the first two playoff games including the first in Canada in 1981.
These days Rogers works for the Major League Baseball Players Association.
The Score on Steve Rogers – 6.5
Steve has a pretty great signature. I think it came out best on the 1978 card. But all these cards a bit busy or dark where he signed it so it doesn’t show it off as good as I would like. The ’78 Topps card I think looks great with the white version of the old Expos uniforms though.
Thanks Mr. Rogers! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
