The Story of the Autograph

Steve Lubratich is a former infielder in the major leagues. He played in the 1981 and 1983 seasons for the California Angels.

Lubratich is a California native. He went to college at Cal-Riverside and played for the Highlanders in 1976 and 1977. The Angels signed him as an amateur free agent in 1977. But he wouldn’t make his major debut until four years later on September 27, 1981 at the very end of the season. He only played in seven games to close out that season.

He was back in the minors for all of the 1982 season and then made it back to the majors in 1983. He played in 57 games hitting .218 with no home runs and seven RBI. That would be his last chance in the majors and he played his final major league game on September 30, 1983.

These days he works in scouting for the Cleveland Guardians.

I always feel odd, maybe bad(?) for cards like this. Steve didn’t play in the majors after the 1983 season, yet he has a 1984 Topps card. I think it’s great that someone earns a card, but it’s a bit awkward if you didn’t play in a game again. Either way, Steve’s signature came out really good on this card.

Thanks Mr. Lubratich! I’m giving this return a 7.
