The Story of the Autograph

Stan Bahnsen is a former starter and reliever in the major leagues. He played in 16 seasons from 1966 to 1982 with the New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox, Oakland Athletics, Montreal Expos , California Angels, and Philadelphia Phillies.

Bahnsen is a native of Iowa, growing up in Council Bluffs. He went to the University of Nebraska and was drafted by the Yankees in the fourth round of the 1965 MLB Draft. He earned his first action in the majors on September 9, 1966 after two years in the minors. He’d be back in the minors in 1967 and then up to the bigs for good in 1968. That season he went 17-12 with a team leading 2.05 ERA and was named the AL Rookie of the Year. That was his best season as a Yankee.

The Yankees traded him to the White Sox for Rich McKinney. In an amazing three years he started 118 games during his first three years with the Sox and then had 28 more before being moved to the A’s in 1975. He had mirror image years in the first two years in the Windy City. He went 21-16 in 1972 and then 18-21 in 1973, leading the majors in losses. After his time with the A’s he moved on to Montreal and started to work exclusively out of the bullpen after that first year with the Expos. He moved on to the Angels and Phillies before calling it a career in 1983.

In 1992 he played one season for Haarlem Nicols in the Dutch Major Leagues, just before they claimed bankruptcy.

I don’t think I sent him a fee for this request, but I think Stan has a rule. If I remember it correctly he will sign 2-3 for free but anything over that he asks for something like $10. I think the next time I request him to sign something I’ll send him $10 no matter what I’m sending. I like his signature, especially on that 1981 Topps card. I just wish I had some cards of him a lot earlier in his career.

Thanks Mr. Bahnsen! I’m giving this return a 7.
