The Story of the Autograph
Sid Monge is a former left-handed relief pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1975 to 1984 with the California Angels, Cleveland Indians, Philadelphia Phillies, San Diego Padres and Detroit Tigers.
Monge was born in Mexico and moved to the United States at the age of 16. The Angels drafted him out of high school in the 24th round of the 1970 MLB Draft. After several years in the Angels minor league system he was called up to make his major league debut on September 12, 1975.
One of his best seasons was 1979. He went 12-10 with a 2.40 ERA with career highs in appearances (76) and innings pitched (131.0). Once you see 70’s in appearances it does start running through you head that he was almost in half the games his team played. That year he was selected for his one and only All-Star team.
He also had a great year in 1983 when he split time between the Phillies and Padres after being traded for Joe Lefebvre. He went 10-3 with a 3.70 ERA in 61 games and 80.1 innings. The year prior he gave up Tony Gwynn’s first career hit.
These days Monge is a pitching coach in the Mexican Baseball League. He coached prior to that in the minors with the St. Louis Cardinals and Detroit Tigers. He was inducted into the Mexican Baseball Hall of Fame in 2004.
The Score on Sid Monge – 5.5
Sid has a small signature. I think there are two things with these cards. The first is that the 1978 Topps card is so dark. It really doesn’t let you see the signature very well. The second is that while Sid had a card in 1985, he didn’t actually play. But when you are trying to use doubles, you only have so many cards to choose from.
Thanks Mr. Monge! I’m giving this return a 5.5.
