The Story of the Autograph
Shawn Green had a long career in the majors, spending 15 years roaming mostly right field for four different teams. After first playing for Toronto he moved on to Los Angeles, Arizona and then New York to play with the Mets. He’s a two-time All-Star (one in the AL and one in the NL) as well as a Gold Glove and Silver Slugger winner. He also finished in the top-10 in MVP voting three times in his career.
Green was born in Illinois but grew up in California. He’s Jewish and was often linked to Hank Greenberg. Of Jewish major leaguers, only Greenberg has more homers and RBIs in the majors than Green. I don’t remember him as a loud or outspoken guy and I think that adds to the fact that you don’t think of how good he was until you see some comparisons. At the time he retired, he was one of only four active players with at least 300 homers, 1,000 RBI, 400 doubles, a .280 average and 150 stolen bases. The others… Barry Bonds, Ken Griffey, Jr, and Gary Sheffield. And all those were at least two years older than Green with at least 1,400 more at bats. Yes, they did have A LOT more homers, etc., but that’s some pretty good company for his day.
I won’t say I remember him as a Met, because I really think of him as a Dodger and a Blue Jay, but the teams he was on as a Met were pretty good. He had some down years in New York after being traded from Arizona in 2006. But those were also his 14th and 15th years in the league. And in typical fashion of guys who come to New York to play for the Mets, Shawn was on the DL for the first time in his career in NY when he had a chip fracture in his foot. HE retired before the 2008 season after becoming a free agent at the end of the 2007 season.
The Score on Shawn Green – 5.0
Wow! I’ve gotten some old ones back and this was definitely a write-off. Whenever I see those envelopes with my old address from almost six years ago coming in I know it’s going to be something special. I love the cards that I had sent out with this one. First the prospect card is great because it almost doesn’t look like him. I know he didn’t play for the Mets for very long and it was the end of his career, but that’s my favorite team and some teams that were great to follow in those years. Shawn has a squiggly mess of a signature and the cards could have had a better place to sign. I’d probably bump up the score if it weren’t for the cards.
Thanks Mr. Green! I’m giving these a 5.
