The Story of the Autograph

Scott Servais played catcher in the majors for four different teams over 11 years. He played for the Astros (1991-1995), Cubs (1995-1998), Giants (1999), Rockies (2000) and then second stints with the Giants (2000) and Astros (2001). After playing he spent time in the from office for the Rangers and Angels before becoming the manager of the Seattle Mariners in 2016.

Servais was drafted by the Mets in 1985 but never signed and decided to go to school at Creighton. During his time at Creighton he also spent time with the US team and played in several events including the 1988 Seoul Olympics where team USA won the gold. The Astros ended up drafting him in 1988 and Scott spent his first time in the majors in 1991.

After 4+ years with the Astros he was traded to the Cubs with Luis Gonzalez. He was able to get to the postseason with the Cubs in 1998 and that marked the only time he would play in the playoffs. His best year, and probably years, was with the Cubs. In 1996 he played in 129 games (a career high) and hit .265 with 11 home runs and 63 RBI.

He’s been the Mariners manager for the last two years. He worked for Jerry Dipoto with the Angels during his time in that front office. When Dipoto was hired by the Mariners to serve as the GM late in the 2015 season, he hired Scott shortly after the season ended. In his time with the Mariners so far he has a .506 record (164-160) and the team hasn’t made the postseason.

The Score on Scott Servais – 5.5

I’ve gotten Scott to sign multiple cards before via a home address, but in this case he sent back two Mariners team cards. I don’t know if that is because he just doesn’t sign cards like that or if he is only signing one these days. I didn’t pay close enough attention either because the card that I got back is a double of one I already have that he signed. And the original one I had is a bit better with a bigger signature. I’m trying to send to Scott again in spring training and we’ll see if he signs the team cards.

Thanks Mr. Servais! I’m giving this one a 5.5.
