The Story of the Autograph
Sam Wyche is a former player and coach in the NFL. He played from 1968 through 1976 as a quarterback for the Bengals, Redskins, Lions and Cardinals. He’s been a coach several players but he was a head coach for Indiana in 1983 and then professionally with the Bengals and Bucs from 1984 through 1995. These days he coaches at Pickens High School in South Carolina.
Since these are cards of him as a coach I’m going to stay in that area for this post. He started coaching when he while he was at South Carolina for his MBA and acted as an assistant coach there in 1967 for the Gamecocks. After his playing days he was on the staff of Bill Walsh with the 49ers from 1979 through 1982, winning a Super Bowl in 1981. He moved back to college to be the head coach of Indiana in 1983.
In 1984 Wyche took a job with the Bengals where he’s probably known best as a coach. He started out not too bad with second place finished in his first three years, but then the 1987 year they fell to a 4-11 record. But the next year Wyche turned it around and the Bengals made it to their second Super Bowl. Unfortunately they couldn’t hold off the 49ers who pulled off a last minute victory on the famous John Taylor catch.
He was a emotional and unconventional coach and moved on to the Bucs before the end of his head coaching career in the NFL. His teams didn’t do so well, but he was the one who drafted Derrick Brooks, Warren Sapp and John Lynch.
The Score on Sam Wyche – 6.0
You can kind of see one of his nicknames, “Wicky Wacky Wyche” in is signature. I really like the one on the ’91 Pro Set card. It really sticks out well on that card. The other card… not so much. I mean probably three quarters of the card is black so he found the one place he could sign it. Still he stuck with his style in the place he could sign.
Thanks Mr. Wyche. I’m giving this one a 6.0.
