The Story of the Autograph
Sam Ewing is a former outfielder in the major leagues. His career spanned from 1973 to 1978 and during that time he played for the Chicago White Sox and Toronto Blue Jays. He also played in Japan with the Nippon-Ham Fighters in 1979.
Ewing is a native of Tennessee and attended college at the University of Tennessee. He later went on to earn his master’s in Exercise Physiology and worked towards a doctorate in sports psychology and psychology at Michigan State University. He was first drafted out of high school by the Yankees in the 45th round of the 1967 MLB Draft and chose not to sign. The Expos later drafted him in the first round of the 1970 MLB Draft while he was in college but he still didn’t sign. He did sign the next year when the Chicago White Sox chose him with the fifth overall pick of the 1971 MLB Draft.
He made his major league debut on September 11, 1973. In a “Welcome to the majors moment” or rather moments… he was stuck out four times by Nolan Ryan in his first game as part of a 17 strike out game for Ryan. He only appeared in eleven games that first season and wouldn’t be back in the majors again until he got another 19 games in 1976. The White Sox left him available for the Blue Jays to choose in the 1976 expansion draft and they chose him with the 57th pick. In the best shot he had the Blue Jays got him into 97 games in 1977. Ewing hit .287 with four homers and 34 RBI.
After playing in his last major league game on October 1, 1978, he went on to play in Japan. He came back to the minors and the team fired their manager. They chose Ewing to manage the team and he completed that season and the next before being let go.
The Score on Sam Ewing – 6.0
Sam has a pretty zig zaggy signature. The “S” for some reason makes me think of the Spinal Tap “S”. I don’t really know why though. It does have a bit of a lightning bolt quality to it. Unfortunately there is a little bit of a smudge on the 1979 card.
Thanks Mr. Ewing! I’m giving this return a 6 overall.
