The Story of the Autograph
Russ Springer is a former right-handed relief pitcher in the major leagues. He put together a very long career, pitching in eighteen seasons from 1993 to 2010 with the New York Yankees, California Angels, Philadelphia Phillies, Houston Astros (twice), Arizona Diamondbacks (twice), Atlanta Braves, St. Louis Cardinals (twice), Oakland Athletics, Tampa Bay Rays, and Cincinnati Reds.
Springer is a native of Louisiana and went to LSU to play baseball for the Tigers. The Yankees drafted him out of college in the seventh round of the 1989 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut for them a few years later on April 17, 1992. Before the year of 1992 was done the Yankees traded him to the Angels with Jerry Nielsen and JT Snow for Jim Abbott. That would be the first move in a lot of moves in his career, but only a couple via traded.
He was part of almost every type of movement transaction. First was the amateur draft to the Yankees, then traded to the Angels, then another traded, release sign free agent signing, expansion draft (to the Diamondbacks, and then lots of moves as a free agent. While you could say that’s typical of a reliever, that still is a lot of moves and teams.
His best seasons were probably 2007 and 2008 while he was with the Cardinals. In those years he went 11-3 in 163 games with a 3.03 ERA, the lowest ERA he had with any other team.
The Score on Russ Springer – 7.0
Russ has a really loose and wide open signature. He probably signs pretty quickly. But I would also say that a signature like that lends itself to filling up the card pretty well and he did that. I think these show off his signature pretty well but the Angels cards might be the best. I’d like to try to find some other cards of him in different jerseys but as many teams as he played with that might be hard to get them all.
Thanks Mr. Springer! I’m giving this return a 7 overall.
