The Story of the Autograph
Roy Smith is a former right-handed starting pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1984 to 1991 to Cleveland Indians, Minnesota Twins, and Baltimore Orioles.
Smith was born and raised in Mount Vernon, NY. He was drafted in 1979 by the Phillies in the third rounds of the MLB Draft. He didn’t make it to the majors with the Phillies though. Before that could happen he was traded in 1982 by the Phillies to the Cleveland Indians in a deal that also involved Jerry Reed. Two years later he made his major league debut on June 23, 1984.
After two seasons of pitching for the Indians he was traded to the Twins along with Ramon Romero for Bryan Oelkers and Ken Schrom. His first two seasons with the Twins didn’t amount to much. He only appeared in 21 games and five starts. But in 1989 he got a good shot and put up his best season with a 10-6 record and a 3.92 ERA in 32 games with 26 starts.
He didn’t go to the postseason with the Twins in 1987 and left the team for Baltimore for his final season before they made the postseason again. He stayed in the minors for two more seasons before retiring in 1993. He worked as a scout for the Pirates and ultimately made it to the assistant GM position. He later moved on to the Dodgers, Blue Jays and Mets in their front offices and as a scout.
The Score on Roy Smith – 6.0
Roy has a good strong signature that’s helped by the thick marker he used and the fact that there’s a compactness to it. I think while it looks really strong, some of these the marker let him down. If you look at the 1991 Score card the marker looks like its a little light. But the 1991 Fleer card looks great.
Thanks Mr. Smith! I’m giving this return a 6 overall.
