The Story of the Autograph

Ron Roenicke is a former outfielder and manager in Major League Baseball and is currently the bench coach for the Boston Red Sox. He played from 1981 through 1988 with the Dodgers, Mariners, Padres, Giants, Phillies and Reds. He never spend more than 2.5 seasons with any one team during that eight year career as a player.

Roenicke was born and raised in California and attended college at UCLA. Between 1974 and 1976 he was drafted four times with out signing a contract. The A’s, Giants, Tigers and Braves all came calling without any luck. Finally the Dodgers drafted him in the first round of the 1977 draft with the 17th overall pick and he signed. He debuted for the Dodgers on September 1, 1981 and stay there until he was released in mid-1983.

After finishing 1983 with the Mariners, he signed next with the Padres. A fortuitous signing in a way as the Padres made it to the World Series. Roenicke got to appear in two games of an ultimately losing effort against the Tigers. He bounced around a bunch after that.

He moved on to coaching after his playing days. That lead him to being chosen to be the Milwaukee Brewers manager in 2011. He spent the next four plus years there before being fired. But, in his first year he led the Brewers to a 96-win season – the most wins in franchise history and an NL Central title. He’s the fourth manager in their history to have a winning season in their first year. He had three winning season overall.

Now he’s the bench coach in Boston and was with them for their World Series win last year.

I actually got these back during Spring Training. But Ron has signed when I sent to him while he was managing in Milwaukee during the season a few years back too. I’ve always seen him sign with the small Sharpie and it can get hidden in the cards little bit depending on the card. Of all these, the ’83 Topps is my favorite.

Thanks Mr. Roenicke! I’m giving this return a 5.
