The Story of the Autograph
Rod Berstine played in the NFL for nine seasons with the San Diego Chargers and the Denver Broncos. Wikipedia has him listed as a “running back, tight end” and while those might be two positions he played, I think his Topps card refers to him as an “H-Back” which is something you don’t see as much as you used to (although the Packers had that going a bit last year). It is definitely odd to see a running back wearing 82, which is what Bernstine wore while with the Chargers.
Bernstine went to Texas A&M and started as a running back. In his sophomore season he didn’t like it too much when the coach moved him to tight end. But as a senior he made the All-SWC team at tight end and he holds the school record for the most receptions in a single season. In the 1987 NFL Draft, San Diego drafted him in the first round with the 24th pick.
He’s mostly listed as a running back and his statistics for most of his career suggest that. The first two years San Diego had him receiving more than running as he only had 16 yards on the ground in those years. But after than his statistics start to even out and then swing toward “running back” numbers. His highest rushing total was 816 yards with four touchdowns for the Broncos in 1993. That would be the same year he set his highest receiving total as well with 372 yards making 1993 his most successful statistical year.
The Score on Rod Bernstine – 6.0
Rod has a good signature but there’s one thing I feel like I’ve been preaching about lately that help it out even more – THE SIZE. This is a nice big signature and it really fills up the space well. I think what knocks it down a little bit it how the marker faded on a couple of the cards a little bit. I really like how his “B” came out on the Pro Set Platinum and the Topps card.
Thanks Mr. Bernstine! I’m giving this return a 6.
