The Story of the Autograph

Roberto Hernandez had a pretty long career in the majors as a right-handed relief picther. While he jumped around between a few clubs towards the end of is career, his longest stints were with the White Sox to start his career and then the Tampa Bay Rays. He also spent time with the Giants, Royals, Braves, Phillies, Mets (twice) Pirates, Indians and Dodgers.

Hernandez was born in Puerto Rico, but moved shortly after to the Dominican Republic. Then when he was two they moved to New York City. He played during high school but had to drop out to take care of this mother. He eventually made it to UConn where he played as a catcher. He continued at catcher in 1985 during summer ball in Virginia. He really wanted to pitch and the team wouldn’t allow him too until they found another catcher. He struck out 14 batter is his first start. He moved on to South Carolina-Aiken just to get a chance to pitch. He did until he hurt his arm but pitched well after recovering.

The Angels made him the 16th overall pick in the 1986 draft. They would trade him to the White Sox in 1989 and while in there farm system in 1991 he had blod clots that caused numbness in his hand. He made his debut as a starter later that year. He had some great seasons for the White Sox and was an All-Star in 1996 when he had a 6-5 record, 1.91 ERA and 38 saves in 84.2 innings.

Overall he topped 25 saves ten times in his career. His high was 43 in 1999 during his other All-Star season with the Rays. He also had an ERA under 2.00 twice in his career as well as leading the league or the majors in games finished several times.

The Score on Roberto Herndandez – 4.5

Roberto has always had somewhat of a messy signature that I remember. It’s great that he makes it so big though. That ’93 Upper Deck card is a problem with the black jacket he’s wearing. I’m sure you notice how much these rubbed off in the envelope too. The Collector’s Choice came out pretty good except for that, but it is the best one of the bunch.

Thanks Mr. Hernandez! These get a 4.5.
