The Story of the Autograph
Ricky Nelson was a former outfielder in the major leagues. He played from 1983 to 1986 and spent his entire major league career with the Seattle Mariners.
Nelson was born and raised in Arizona. He went to Arizona State University and while there was part of the Sun Devils 1981 College World Series championship team. He was drafted twice before he signed. The first was by the Angels in the 24th round of the 1980 MLB Draft. Then the Mariners chose him the following year in the fourth round. He made his major league debut for them on May 17, 1983.
He got some significant playing time in his first season with 98 games and 311 plate appearances. He hit .254 that year with five homers and 36 RBI. But unfortunately that was the most he would ever play in the majors. He spent the next three years mostly in the minor leagues and never played more than ten games in a season. The Mariners traded him to the Mets in 1986 who in turn traded him tot he Indians in 1987.
Nelson passed away in November 2021 at the age of 62.
The Score on Ricky Nelson – 6.5
I have to admit that I wasn’t aware that Ricky died until I got this far into my backlog. I received this from him just a couple months before he passed away. These game out really good. It’s nice that he used a black marker on these because a blue marker would have just been hidden by the blue jerseys.
Thanks Mr. Nelson! You are missed.
