The Story of the Autograph

Rick Schu played third base in the majors for the Phillies, Orioles, Tigers, Angels and Expos. He played for nine seasons in major league baseball plus he played an additional two in Japanese baseball. These days he coaches with the San Francisco Giants.

Rick was born in Philadelpia, PA but grew up in California. The Phillies signed him as an amateur free agent out of high school in 1980. After a few years in their minor league system he debuted as a September call-up on September 1, 1984. As a third base prospect for the Phillies it was unlikely he would get much action back then as he had Mike Schmidt ahead of him. But the Phillies moved Schmidt to first and gave Schu a shot. He hit .252 in 112 games in 1985 and they moved Schmidt back to third. Schu would stick with the Phillies for a couple more years before moving on to Baltimore.

He moved around a bunch and spent the longest time in Baltimore in the late 80’s. Then quick stops in Detroit and Anaheim happened before he returned to the Phillies for a year in 1991. After that year he went to Japan to play. He returned to the majors in 1996 and played one game with Montreal and didn’t get a hit.

Schu’s best season was probably 1986 when he played in 92 games and hit .274 wit 8 homers and 25 RBI.

The Score on Rick Schu – 6.5

Rick doesn’t have a really long name so it’s not surprising to see that his signature is a bit compact. Of course that makes it seem small but while it’s compact it’s a pretty good size vertically. Some of these cards work a lot better for his signature than others. Those two Donruss cards stick out to me as the best.

Thanks Mr. Schu! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
