The Story of the Autograph

Rick Cerone is a former catcher in the major leagues. He played from 1975 to 1992 for the Indians, Blue Jays, Yankees (three stints), Braves, Brewers, Red Sox, Mets and Expos.

Cerone was born and raised in New Jersey and stayed in state to play college baseball at Seton Hall. The Indians drafted him with the seventh overall pick in 1975 and he would make his debut in August later that same year. He didn’t see much more time with the Indians after that and became a Blue Jay for their inaugural season in 1977 and was their very first starting catcher.

He moved on to the Yankees for his first stint with them in 1980 and was a replacement for Thurman Munson who died the year before. He had what would be a career year playing in 147 games, hitting .277 with 14 homers and 85 RBI. Most of those totals are career highs by a wide margin. After being traded to the Braves he would change teams almost yearly for the rest of this career (the exception being Boston in 1988 and ’89).

This is my second successful return for Rick, to check out the first go to my post from June of 2017.

I always like Rick’s signature. It’s got some good flair to it and I love the way he signs his “R.” The one thing that you will always get with Rick is that he’ll sign the card sideways (I guess that’s the way to put it). This card is almost built for that since the picture on the card has him cropped to the left.

Thanks Mr. Cerone! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
