The Story of the Autograph

Rich Wortham is a former left-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He played during four seasons from 1978 to 1983 with the Chicago White Sox and Oakland Athletics.

Wortham was born and raised in Odessa, Texas. He was drafted a few times before signing. First the Rangers drafted him out of high school in 1972. Then the Mets drafted him in 1975 out of Texas. And finally the White Sox drafted him in the second round of the 1976 MLB Draft. He debuted for the White Sox on May 3, 1978.

He played for three seasons with the White Sox in the majors with his best being the second in 1979 with a 14-14 record and a 4.90 ERA in 33 starts. In 1990 he went switched from the rotation to the bullpen and really was inconsistent.  Control issues put him down to the minors in the next couple of years.

During his time away from the majors he was signed by the Phillies but never got back tot he majors with them before being released. The Athletics picked him in 1983, but he pitched in one game recording no outs and giving up three hits and one run.

These days he lives in Texas and he was elected to the College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2010.

Rich has a really action filled signature. I love the “W” he has although you can’t really tell it’s a “W”. It still looks cool though. The 1981 card really didn’t come out well but that’s down to the card and not his signature.

Thanks Mr. Wortham! I’m giving this return a 5.5.
