The Story of the Autograph
Rich Gedman is a former catcher who played in the major leagues from 1980 through 1992. He’s best known for played with the Red Sox, which he did from 1980 through 1990. He also played for the Astros and Cardinals before ending his career.
Gedman was born and raised in Worcester, MA. He wasn’t drafted and in 1977 the Red Sox signed him as a free agent. He made his major league debut on September 7, 1980 as a pinch hitter for Carl Yastrzemski. After Carlton Fisk left in 1981, Gedman shared the catching duties and the Sporting News named him their Rookie of the Year.
After a couple of years of being down and improving, 1984 through 1986 were some great year for Gedman. He earned two All-Star nods, hit a career high .294 in 1985, a career high 24 homers in 1984, and a career high 80 RBI in 1985. But defensively he worked with Roger Clemens on some great highlights and of course in 1986, went to the World Series. In 1990 he was sent to the Astros and after finishing out the year there, he signed with the Cardinals and played there until 1982.
Gedman has been coaching in the minors for a long time at this point. He’s worked with the Pawtucket Red Sox as their hitting coach since 2015.
The Score on Rich Gedman – 8.0
I’ve tried to get Rich’s signature for years and never gotten a return for him. I won’t say this is my white whale, because I’m not that desperate to get it, but it does feel good to get it after so many failures. Or maybe it would be better to say after so many write-offs. His signature looks great too. That 1987 Topps card might even be one of the best quality signatures I’ve gotten all year.
Thanks Mr. Gedman! I’m giving this one an 8.
