I was supposed to go to a card show Saturday. I’m not necessarily mad at missing it though. I ditched it for something else (more on that later), but to replace the card buying urge… I went to X. Ryan’s Vintage Cards has some nice lots (or varying quality) of sets from the 50’s and 60’s. I took a shot at a few sets. I maybe spent a little more than I might have at a show, but it’s basically the same as going to the guy that has the cheaper old cards and just digging through boxes. It’s definitely faster and easier!
But what I did do Saturday was go to the Mason game. They’ve got a great win streak going and they have been really fun to watch. Mason is definitely an “if you build it they will come” atmosphere… as in most people will show up at Eagle Bank Arena (Party in the E.B.A.) or even get engaged if they are playing well. So it was pretty much a packed house.
Unfortunately they went down big earlier in the first half and it wasn’t looking good. They just came out looking… meh. But after going down 16 at one point they came back to take the lead in the second half. Then they went down again almost immediately after that. Only to come back again and hang on to win.
Senator Tim Kaine was at the game with the President of the school (his wife was once the interim President of the school) and he played harmonica with the Green Machine. He was pretty dang good!
I hope everyone is enjoyed their weekend and has a great week!
The Review
Here’s what happened on the blog last week:
- Monday: Ricky Proehl
- Tuesday: Tito Fuentes, Bob Davis
- Wednesday: Scott Scudder
- Thursday: Raisel Iglesias
- Friday: Ross Jones
- Saturday: Ralph Botting
- Sunday: Bill Melton
This #twofortuesday last week as all Padres. Once was a more famous (maybe not famous, maybe recognizable from a card perspective?) than the other. It was followed up by two Reds cards that happened to be in the backlog.
The Preview
Here’s what I have coming up for this week:
- Monday: Hargan to Heart…

- Tuesday: Dept of Ted-ucation…
- Wednesday: Graham cracker…
- Thursday: Cruz-ing…
- Friday: Lend me your Kearney…
- Saturday: Turk-ey…
- Sunday: Hextall in the family…
I’ve got another #twofortuesday theme for the coming week. Rangers happened to pop-up in the backlog!
Other Notes
This was another good week of returns. But it was also the highest number of failures I’ve had in a while. I got back 21 envelopes and three of them were failures. There was something interesting in the failures though. They were from Kelly Stinnett (who I tried again at a different address), Rick Zombo (who is no longer at Lindenwood University), and Pat Corrales. Pat Corrales was the interesting one. I sent something to him prior to his passing (which was in August of 2023). I actually sent it in November of 2020, but just got it back. Lots of others got theirs back too. It was odd because I really didn’t expect it to come back at all, let alone after all this time. So I had a straggler failure at 1518 days.
That wasn’t the only major straggler I had though. Two of the shorter stragglers were Hunter Pence (via the Giants at 267 days) and Mark Prior (via the Dodgers at 210 days). Those sort of make sense as a lot of guys you send to via teams take longer to get back to you. The Pence try was a long shot so I was really happy to get that one back. But the longest straggler I had this past week was Matt Bahr at 1774 days. It was about a week short of a full five years!
The Recent TTM Success page will be updated next weekend.
Have a great week!
