The Story of the Autograph

Raisel Iglesias has established himself as one of the premier relief pitchers in Major League Baseball (MLB). Known for his electric stuff, impeccable command, and ability to dominate high-pressure situations, Iglesias’ journey from Cuba to the big leagues is a testament to his resilience and determination.

Iglesias was born on January 4, 1990, in Isla de la Juventud, Cuba. Growing up, baseball was more than a pastime, it was a way of life. Iglesias showed early promise on the mound, quickly becoming a standout pitcher with his blazing fastball and deceptive breaking pitches. He rose through the ranks in Cuba’s national baseball system and earned a spot on the Cuban national team. Iglesias showcased his talents on the international stage, representing Cuba in tournaments like the 2013 World Baseball Classic. However, like many Cuban athletes, Iglesias dreamed of playing in MLB, where he could compete against the best players in the world.

In 2013, Iglesias made the life-changing decision to leave Cuba, defecting in pursuit of his dream. It was a risky and uncertain path, but one he believed would lead to greater opportunities.
Signing with the Cincinnati Reds. After defecting, Iglesias trained and prepared to showcase his abilities for MLB scouts. In 2014, the Cincinnati Reds signed him to a seven-year, $27 million deal, recognizing his potential as a high-impact pitcher.

Iglesias made his MLB debut on April 12, 2015, as a starting pitcher for the Reds. While his early outings showed flashes of brilliance, the Reds transitioned him to the bullpen, where his talents truly flourished. By 2016, Iglesias had emerged as a dominant reliever, with his high-90s fastball, devastating slider, and deceptive changeup making him one of the most difficult pitchers to face. His role as the team’s closer solidified in 2017, and he consistently delivered under pressure, earning saves and shutting down opponents in critical moments.

During his time with the Reds, Iglesias became one of the most reliable closers in baseball, recording three consecutive seasons with at least 28 saves from 2017 to 2019. He also became a leader in the bullpen, setting the tone with his professionalism and work ethic.

In December 2020, the Reds traded Iglesias to the Los Angeles Angels, a move that marked the next chapter of his career. With the Angels, Iglesias continued to cement his reputation as one of the league’s elite closers. In 2021, Iglesias posted one of the best seasons of his career, with a 2.57 ERA, 103 strikeouts, and 34 saves over 70 innings pitched. His ability to lock down games made him a key asset for the Angels, and the team rewarded him with a four-year, $58 million contract extension in December 2021.

In 2022, Iglesias was traded to the Atlanta Braves midseason, where he immediately bolstered an already strong bullpen. With the Braves, Iglesias maintained his dominance and became a critical piece in their pursuit of another postseason run.

Iglesias is known for his versatility and ability to pitch multiple innings when needed. His arsenal includes a fastball that regularly touches the high 90s, a sharp slider that generates swings and misses, and a changeup that keeps hitters off balance. His composure on the mound and ability to perform under pressure have made him one of the game’s most reliable closers.

Off the field, Iglesias is known for his quiet demeanor and focus on family. After overcoming the challenges of leaving Cuba and adapting to life in the United States, he has used his platform to inspire others, particularly young Cuban athletes pursuing their dreams.

Raisel Iglesias’ journey from Cuba to MLB stardom is a story of perseverance and ambition. His success as a closer, combined with his leadership and resilience, has made him a role model for aspiring players around the world.

As Iglesias continues to add to his impressive career, fans and teammates alike appreciate the dedication and passion he brings to the game. Whether closing out a high-stakes playoff game or mentoring younger pitchers, Iglesias’ impact on baseball is undeniable.

Raisel is one of the best signers of all current players. I’ve gotten so frustrated with sending to Spring Training and things like that that I don’t think I’ve made any attempts since 2019. But he’s one of the guys that you can think you will get back. I need to get a card of him in a Braves uniform though, if not an Angels one to try to get him as more than just a Red.

Thanks Mr. Iglesias! I’m giving this return a 6.5 overall.

This is my fourth successful return from him. To see the other successful returns, check out these posts:
