If you followed me more over the last six months you would know that I have been heavily into what Ryan from Ryan’s Vintage Cards is doing (@ryansvintagecards on IG and @RyansVintageCA on Twitter). Just going by the fact that this is labeled as post “#5” kind of tells you something. Normally Ryan offers packs with 20 cards, a guaranteed autograph and your chasing some pretty cool old cards (here’s my last post as an example), but this one was a bit different.
Inspired by a suggestion from a long-time customer he changed things up and offered some “True Vintage” History Packs. It was a one or two day offer, a little more expense, but you were guaranteed some 50s and 60s cards in everything… three packs of vintage and I couldn’t pass up. What a great way to expand my collection from those years.
I’m not posting everything I got in the packs, but just the things I thought were really interesting to me as I opened them up.
Let’s get to it!
Pack #1
Amazing! This first back hit really hard for me. First off, the Dick Allen feels like the epitome of what a 1975 Topps card should be. The insane colors of the card itself and then that old White Sox uniform in the baby blue. Of course I would rather have him in a Phillies uniform, but that card is downright badass.
From there we’ve got two Hall of Famers even though Hoyt is in a uniform you don’t think of him in. I think I’m going to try to get that Rollie signed because the image is awesome and ’78 is one of my favorite sets. I’ll be trying to get that Oliver signed too especially since that was a title winning season for the Pirates.
Continuing into pack two with a Met and even better, a Met that will sign TTM. The Wills was a bit of a theme for these packs because there were a few of these oddball 1972 Topps cards in the packs. I think the other part of these old cards that I love is seeing some old logos like the old Washington Senators logo on the Julio Becquer card.
Pack #2
The second pack was a pretty good follow up. There are a couple baseball families represented well in these cards with the Francona and Alou names in there. I think I’ve tried to get Davey to sign that 1975 Topps card and he didn’t. I would bet that just because of how much I sent when I asked him to sign, so I might try that again as a TTM.
There are more TTM signers in this one with Larry Dierker and Felix Millan in there. I don’t know if I will be sending this one to Felix though. He tends to sign in ball point pen and I’m not sure how well this card will hold up. More awesome old logos on that Jackie Jensen card. Why doesn’t the Boston mascot look like that?
Pack #3
The third pack has some more Hall of Famers. The Stargell is really fun with the picture of him as a kid. I actually said in a recent post that I really didn’t have any Stargell cards and I got one of him and Hank Aaron on a leaders card. Well, at least this one is a card with just Willie on it. And how could you not love the sideburns on Orlando?
This is the second or third time this has happened recently, but Fred Valentine passed away right around the time I opened up these packs. But this is another reason I love getting these old cards because it makes me go look up more about these guys’ careers when I find a card I’m really interested in.
And A Good Time Was Had By All!
As always, it’s fun to open up cards… but I don’t think I’ll every go wrong when opening up some vintage. Ryan does a great job with these offers and I highly recommend you giving him a shot when his next offers come up in February.
