The Story of the Autograph
Phil Coyne is a former usher for the Pittsburgh Pirates. That might not sound glamorous but last year he was immortalized on a 2018 Topps Allen& Ginter card during the same year he decided to retire at the age of 99.
Coyne started as an usher in 1936 when he was 18 years old. At that time the Pirates were playing games at Forbes field and now they are two ballparks removed from there. It seems the only thing that might have stopped him from being an usher might be World War II when he was deployed in Europe.
He went beyond baseball too. He was an usher at Steelers games as well. He also ushered when he attended church services. I guess you do what you love and ultimately, Coyne must have loved helping people and delivering a great customer experience.
One of his favorite moments… you probably guess right – the Bill Mazeroski homer in the bottom of the ninth in Game 7 of the 1960 World Series.
The Score on Phil Coyne – 5.0
I don’t have many of these non-baseball cards signed in Allen & Ginter sets, but I’ve set some aside to try to do that. I like that Phil is my first one. For a 100-year old guy he can still sign pretty well. I’m not sure why he chose to sign the back of the other card. I don’t usually put them facing different ways so maybe he thought that’s where he should sign and not over the picture of PNC park on the front.
Thanks Mr. Coyne! I’m giving this one a 5.
