The Story of the Autograph
Pete O’ Brien is a former first baseman who played in Major League Baseball. He played from 1982 through 1993 with the Rangers, Indians, and Mariners.
O’Brien was born and raised in California. He wasn’t offered a scholarship or drafted out of high school so he played at a local college and then transferred to Nebraska. He was drafted by the Rangers after his junior season and was selected in the 15th round of the 1979 MLB Draft. Three years later he made his major league debut as a September call-up on September 3, 1982.
He played with the Rangers until a trade after the 1988 season that sent him to the Rangers for Julio Franco. After just one season he moved on to Seattle as a free agent and he took over at first base for Alvin Davis as the team tried to push Davis out. He was done with the Mariners in 1993 when Tino Martinez and Edgar Martinez were coming on to the roster.
His best seasons were in Texas. It’s hard to say which season was better between 1986 and 1987:
- 1986 – 156 games, 23 homers, 90 RBI, .290 average
- 1987 – 159 games, 23 homers, 88 RBI, .286 average
He actually received MVP votes in 1986.
The Score on Pete O’Brien – 7.0
Pete’s signature came out really great on these cards. I think they come out best on the Rangers cards because of the blue marker he used and the blue in those uniforms. I think I’m going to have to find some more cards of him from his Rangers years and try him again in the future.
Thanks Mr. O’Brien! I’m giving this return a 7.
