The Story of the Autograph
Paul Mitchell is a former right-handed starting pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1975 to 1980 with the Baltimore Orioles, Oakland Athletics, Seattle Mariners, and Milwaukee Brewers.
Mitchell was born and raised in Worcester, Massachusetts. He was first drafted out of high school by the Pirates in 1968 but chose not to sign. Instead he went to Old Dominion University. The Orioles then drafted him in 1971 with the seventh overall pick in the first round and he signed with them. He debuted for them four years later on July 1, 1975.
He didn’t stay in the majors with them long. At the beginning of the 1976 season he was traded with Don Baylor and Mike Torrez to the A’s for Ken Holtzman, Reggie Jackson and a minor leaguer. He went 9-7 in that first year in Oakland with 26 starts and had a 4.25 ERA. But he didn’t stay in Oakland very long either. In 1977 the newly formed Seattle Mariners purchased his contract in the middle of the season.
Seattle was not a good team and Paul’s record reflected that, but his ERA wasn’t great either. Two years later, in 1979, they would trade him to the Brewers for Randy Stein. He played better record-wise but still had a high ERA, especially finishing that 1979 season. He played his final game with the Brewers on September 21, 1980.
The Score on Paul Mitchell – 6.0
I think Paul has a good signature, but it’s hard to tell. He really just traces the facsimile signature that’s on the card. I think it’s bad enough when someone just signs their current autograph over those, but just straight up tracing it might be worse. Of these, I like the 1980 Topps card better because the blue marker goes better with it.
Thanks Mr. Mitchell! I’m giving this return a 6.
