The Story of the Autograph
Pat Putnam is a former first baseman in the major leauges. He played for the Texas Rangers, Seattle Mariners, and Minnesota Twins from 1977 to 1984. He also played in Japan for the Nippon-Ham Fighters in 1986 and 1987.
Putnam was born in Vermont and raised in Florida. He went to college first at Miami Dade College and then at the University of South Alabama. He was drafted twice before signing. The first was by the Mets in the 12th round of the 1974 MLB Draft but he didn’t sign. The following year he was drafted with the 22nd overall pick of the draft in the first round of the 1975 MLB Draft by the Rangers. He made his major league debut on September 2, 1977.
He was a regular player for the Rangers in his third season. He put up one of the best seasons of his career with a .277 average, 18 homers and 64 RBI in the 1979 season in 139 games. His playing time ultimately decreased over the next few years and he was traded to the Mariners for Ron Musselman. He had another great season in his first season with the Mariners, hitting .269 with a cardd high in homers 19 and RBI (67).
In his second season with the Mariners they traded him to the Twins for a player to be named later. He would only play 14 more games for the Twins that season, his last in the majors. He tried to make it with the Royals in 1985 but couldn’t make it back up. After two seasons playing in Japan he hung up his cleats.
The Score on Pat Putnam – 7.0
Pat has a nice signature and it really came out well on these. Even when he was signing over dark jerseys on the cards they came out pretty well. Maybe just semantics, but he does have more of a signature than an autograph in that it’s pretty standard cursive letters. I think my favorite of these is the 1983 Fleer card. I like the jersey but also the chew in his mouth and stuff. I also like that I got him in all the uniforms he played in.
Thanks Mr. Putnam! I’m giving this return a 7.
