The Story of the Autograph

Mike Torrez is a former right-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1967 to 1984 with the St. Louis Cardinals, Montreal Expos, Baltimore Orioles, Oakland Athletics (twice) New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, and New York Mets.

Torrez was born and raised in Topeka, Kansas. He only played basketball for his high school because they didn’t play baseball and he was part of an American Legion team. The Cardinals and Tigers both saw him pitch and wanted to sign him but the Cardinals won out and he signed as an amateur free agent in September of 1964. He made his major league debut at 20 on September 10, 1967.

He became a full time major leaguer in 1969 and put up a 10-4 record in 24 games with 15 starts to go with a 3.59 ERA. He ran into some trouble from some minor injuries and would be traded to the Expos in 1971. Starting in 1972 he would put together some great seasons. First for the Expos, then a 20-win season with the Orioles, more with the A’s and Yankees and then a few more with Boston before the ending years of his career.

Torres had a big year in 1977 when he was with the Yankees to win the 1977 World Series. The following season he was with the Red Sox and gave up the famous Bucky “Effing” Dent homer.

I love that I got a spread of Mike’s teams on these, especially the Cardinals and Red Sox. I’d love to find a card of his with the Expos. I think of all these my favorite is the 1970 Topps card with the Cardinals. It shows off the autograph the best of all these.

Thanks Mr. Torrez! I’m giving this return a 7.
