The Story of the Autograph

Mike Proly is a former professional baseball player in Major League Baseball. He played as a right-handed relief pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago White Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, and Chicago Cubs from 1976 thought 1983.

Proly was born and raised on Long Island in New York. He didn’t stray too far to go to college and attended St. John’s University in Queens. It was from there that the St. Louis Cardinals drafted him in the ninth round of the 1972 MLB Draft. He would make his debut with the Cardinals four years later on April 10, 1976.

After the 1976 season he was made available in the Rule 5 Draft where he was chose by the Minnesota Twins. He never appeared in the major for them though and was granted free agency at the end of the 1977 season. He signed with the White Sox and ended up with his longest stay with any team – three years. The White Sox would trade him to the Phillies where he spent the 1982 season. Then he moved on to the Cubs where he spent two years. He tried to make it on the Blue Jays after being released by the Cubs in 1984 but never appear in the majors again.

One of his best years was probably 1983 with the Cubs. He went 5-3 in 43 relief appearances and one start. He pitched 82 innings and put up a 2.30 ERA.

Mike does a good job putting up a solid signature. I think a couple of these cards are just a little busy where he put his signature (not that there was a better place to put it though). My favorite of the bunch is 1983 Topps card and if you’ll know I like it because it’s big, and the blue marker goes well with the Cubs uniform.

Thanks Mr. Proly! I’m giving this return a 6.
