The Story of the Autograph
Mike Hartley is a former right-handed relief pitcher in the major leagues. He had a major league career that spanned six seasons between 1989 and 1995. During that time he played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies, Minnesota Twins, Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles.
Hartley was born and raised in California. He was never drafted and signed as an amateur free agent by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1981. But he never appeared for the Cardinals. In 1986 the Dodgers drafted him in the Minor League Draft and he would first appear with them on September 10, 1989. After making five appearances in his first season he made 32 the next including six starts. He put up a 6-3 record with a 2.95 ERA in 79.1 innings. The following season he was traded to the Phillies mid-year with Braulio Castillo for Roger McDowell.
He played for a season and a half in Philly with his best work done in 1992. That year he went 7-6 with a 3.44 ERA in 46 appearances with 55 innings pitched. The following year he moved on to the Twins in a trade that brought David West to Philly. After the 1993 season he was a free agent and signed with the Angels but three days later his contract was purchased by the Chiba Lotte Marines from the NPB.
After being out of the majors for the 1994 season he came back as a free agent with the Red Sox. They released him in August of that season and he finished out with the Orioles that year, making his last appearance in the majors on September 24, 1995.
In more recent years he’s been a minor league pitching coach. He’s also coached a German team that won the 2009 German National Championship and reached the European Final Four Championship. In 2011 he coached the Croatian National Team and then coach in Italy in 2012.

Mike has a pretty standard looking signature for the most part. But he used a great marker and it came out really clear and strong on these cards. I love his “M” with the loops in it and the “H” with that little hitch at the top to start it. He has a pretty good size to his signature too and it goes almost all the way across it and he centers it nicely.
