The Story of the Autograph

Matt Sczur is an outfielder in the major leagues and is currently playing for the San Diego Padres. He grew up in New Jersey and was originally drafted by the Dodgers in the 2007 MLB Draft but decided not to sign. Instead he went to Villanova and played both baseball and football. He did everything for the Wildcats and played wide receiver, running back and wildcat quarterback, helping them to the FCS National Championship.

The Cubs then drafted him in 2010 and he signed with them. They actually gave him a $100K signing bonus, plus offered an additional $500K if he declined to attend the NFL Combine. He made it to the majors in 2014, making his debut on August 17th. He split time between the minors and majors in 2015. In 2016 the he was with the club as they won the World Series. Szczur didn’t make an appearance for them, but it still must have been special to be part of that team.

The Cubs designated Szczur for assignment in May of 2017 and then traded him to the Padres. So far this year he’s not having the greatest season.

In 2009 Szczur did something truly amazing and completely selfless. He donated bone marrow to a 15-month old Ukranian girl essentially saving her life.

Matt has one of those signatures where I can’t really pick out that it’s his name. Those aren’t really my favorites, but if it’s interesting enough I might like it. This one didn’t stick out to me in any particular way though. Something interesting on this one is that I had to confer with my wife on the color of the marker. She felt it was a blue marker that just came out a little odd. I sort of thought it might be green.

Thanks Mr. Szczur! I’m giving this one a 5.
